Birth Photography for Atlanta Home Births

There is something uniquely powerful about welcoming your baby in the place where you already feel most at home.

Documenting Home Birth Stories Across Metro Atlanta

We love photographing home births throughout the greater Atlanta area, including Decatur, East Atlanta, Sandy Springs, Buckhead, Midtown, Alpharetta, Roswell, and the surrounding communities. Whether you're planning a water birth attended by midwives, an intimate birth surrounded by family, or a quiet morning welcoming your newest baby at home, we're honored to document these moments with care and respect.

As a collective of experienced birth photographers, we've photographed home births in apartments, historic bungalows, suburban family homes, and everything in between. No matter where your birth unfolds, our approach remains the same: quietly documenting your story as it happens.

Why We Love Home Birth Photography

Home births often allow families to create an environment that feels deeply personal and intentional.

The familiar spaces. The nursery you've spent months preparing. The family dog keeping watch nearby. Older siblings sleeping in their own beds until it's time to meet the baby. The comfort of your own shower, your own blankets, and your own routines.

These details become part of your birth story.

Because we're documenting birth in your home rather than a hospital setting, every gallery is uniquely personal and filled with the small details that make your family's story your own.

What Home Birth Coverage Looks Like

When labor begins, you'll keep us updated just as you would your midwife, doula, or birth team.

As labor progresses and active labor begins, we'll travel to your home and remain with you throughout labor, birth, and the first hours after your baby arrives.

Home birth coverage often includes:

  • Preparing the birth space

  • Support from your partner, doula, and midwife

  • Labor unfolding naturally in your home environment

  • Time spent in the birth pool, shower, or other comfort measures

  • Sibling involvement and family interactions

  • The moments leading up to birth

  • Your baby's first breath and first cry

  • Immediate skin-to-skin contact

  • First feeding

  • Newborn assessments and postpartum care

  • The first hours of settling in as a family

Unlike traditional portrait photography, there is no posing or directing. Our role is to observe, anticipate meaningful moments, and preserve the story as it naturally unfolds.

Lighting Tips for Home Birth Photography

One of the greatest advantages of home birth is the ability to create an environment that feels exactly the way you want it to.

Many families spend time planning music, comfort measures, scents, and lighting—and lighting can have a significant impact on both your experience and your photographs.

We never use flash during labor or birth.

Flash can feel intrusive and distracting, especially during deeply emotional or vulnerable moments. Instead, we photograph and film entirely using the ambient light already available in your space.

If you're hoping to create a warm, cozy atmosphere, we often recommend bringing or setting up incandescent twinkle lights throughout the birth space.

These lights create a beautiful, soft glow that photographs wonderfully and adds warmth to both photos and films.

One thing we do recommend avoiding is LED string lights.

While they may appear steady to the naked eye, many LED lights create a subtle flicker that can show up in photographs and video footage as distracting flashing or banding.

A few lighting tips we often share with families:

  • Use warm incandescent twinkle lights whenever possible.

  • Open curtains and blinds during daytime labor if natural light is available.

  • Keep bedside lamps accessible.

  • Avoid color-changing lights.

  • Skip LED fairy lights whenever possible.

  • Don't stress if your space feels dim—many of our favorite birth images have been created in low-light environments.

Our goal is never to change the atmosphere you've created. We simply work with the light that already exists and preserve the feeling of the space exactly as you experienced it.

How to Book Home Birth Photography

Most families reserve their due date during the second trimester, though we occasionally have space for later inquiries.

Booking is simple:

  1. Reach out through our inquiry form.

  2. Schedule a consultation call so we can learn more about your family and birth plans.

  3. Choose the coverage option that best fits your needs.

  4. Sign your agreement and submit your retainer.

  5. Relax knowing your birth story is in experienced hands.

One of the unique advantages of working with The Birth Story Collective is the support of an entire team. Rather than relying on a single photographer, you'll have the confidence of knowing three experienced birth photographers are working together behind the scenes to ensure your story is documented.

We would be honored to document your home birth and preserve the moments that become part of your family's story for generations to come.
